Why cost per wear matters

Price tag alone tells you almost nothing about whether something was a good buy. A £15 top worn once cost you £15 every time you looked at it in the wardrobe. A £150 coat worn 100 times over three winters cost £1.50 a wear — cheaper than the bus fare to get there.

Cost per wear reframes the question from “how much did this cost?” to “how much value has this actually given me?” It’s the same maths retailers won’t show you, because it usually favours buying less, buying better, and wearing things more.

The calculator above is a quick, one-off way to check a single item. Dayclo does this automatically for your whole wardrobe: photograph each piece once, log what you wear, and watch the real cost per wear for everything you own update on its own.

What is cost per wear?
Cost per wear is what an item really costs you, worked out by dividing the price you paid by the number of times you've worn it. A £120 coat worn 60 times costs £2 per wear — often far cheaper than a £20 top you've only worn twice.
How do you calculate cost per wear?
Divide the price of the item by the number of times you expect to (or already have) worn it: price ÷ wears = cost per wear. The more you wear something, the lower its cost per wear falls over time.
Is a lower cost per wear always better?
Generally yes — it means you're getting more use out of what you paid for. But it's only useful alongside how much you actually enjoy wearing the item. Dayclo tracks cost per wear automatically for everything in your wardrobe, so you can see this for every item without doing the maths yourself.
